The Force Awakens doesn’t want to play that game, much to its benefit anyone who can’t take a Star Wars film seriously at this point is not worth the movie’s time, and its lightness, both in humor and playful riffing on the Star Wars legend, is one of its best elements.

But it likely won’t crack the Oscar code, either. It’s a fantastic template to build from, and The Force Awakens is smart to use it.

No Star Wars movie since has been nominated for best picture because they were all more of the same (or, in the case of the prequels, just not very good). Abrams and company take their duty in starting the whole thing over again.īut Star Wars was not a best picture nominee in 1977 because of Luke Skywalker’s heroic journey or a lightsaber duel or the design of Darth Vader’s helmet it got there because it was something nobody had ever seen before, as a sci-fi film made on a large scale with mythic, classical overtones. Dozens of films have riffed on Star Wars since 1977 that The Force Awakens does it so well, and with so much originality, is a testament to how seriously J.J.
Īs Richard Lawson explored in his review, The Force Awakens is in some parts a remake of the first Star Wars, lifting story elements and character beats and plot twists to scratch that part of the viewer’s brain that spent the prequels shouting, “Play the hits!” It succeeds because it does more than simply ape the originals, introducing dynamic new characters (especially Daisy Ridley’s Rey) and stirring emotional resonance that expands on the family drama from the original trilogy. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great Star Wars film-but it’s being a Star Wars film, in the end, that may end its best picture chances. I don’t think that’s true anymore, but I'm not sorry I did it: in a wide-open Oscar race, and a box office climate that’s already embraced two returns to 70s franchises ( Creed and Mad Max: Fury Road), a truly stellar Star Wars film could hit all of the right nostalgia and craft buttons for a run at the Oscars.
I was the one predicting, on our Little Gold Men podcast, that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would win best picture.
